The official story is that four planes were hijacked by operatives of the Al-Queda (The Base) with the intent of causing major disruption to the financial and military centers of the USA. This would result in a ripple throughout the world and uncontrollable instability resulting in problems only a grassroot militaristic movement like Al-Queda would be able to gain control of.
Al-Queda has its existence in no small part to the USA and other Western nations. In the 1980s, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Some elements of the US government perceived this as a growing weakness inside the Soviet Union (which was true) and they trained the Muhajareen (founding fathers of Al-Queda) in various measures of guerilla warfare to create a proxy war to weaken the already faultering Soviet Union. The movement was lead by Osama Bin Laden, who was a major USA ally at the time as well as a son of a major Saudi businessmen.
The movement eventually worked, with the Soviet Union under Gorbachev retreating from Afghanistan as the Soviet Union began to collapse from within. However this would only be the beginning. Bin Laden, who once followed the Westen lifestyle began to resent it as his followers and himself saw America's great aid in the war as nothing but a means of hitting their Soviet enemy. They eventually broke all ties with the USA and the west. They officially became Al-Queda in the mid 1990s and declared war on the whole world in 1998.
Al-Queda planned to use explosives on American targets, ironically trained by the very people who they now swore to destroy. In 1993, terrorists supposedly belonging to Al-Queda detonated a van full of TNT in the car park below one of the towers in the WTC. It was supposed to cause the tower to become unstable, crash into the other tower and destroy them both. The plan failed.
Having tried and tested the most obvious strategy to damage the USA, at some point a plan to hit the Twin Towers using airplanes were conceived. I do not know whether the plotters were completely certain the towers would full but they went ahead anyway.
Its also clear the USA were aware of Al-Queda's plan at least a month before about the intending attack but did nothing to prevent the tragedy.
There were 4 planes in total:
1. Plane which flew into the North Tower.
2. Plane which flew into the South Tower.
3. Plane which flew into the Pentagon (believed by many to have actually been a missile due to lack of video footage.)
4. Plane supposedly aiming for the whitehouse which crash landed in Pennyslvania (sp?)
There are many stories conspiracy theories and others about what could have happened that day. But I'm not going to go into them.

Of course 9/11 happened; it was just a few days ago!
And it'll happen, again, a year from now, and so on and so forth! ;)
Seriously though . . .
First, ask your parents about it.
Second, enter "9/11" in the "Search for questions" at the top of most "Yahoo Answers" web pages (this question has been asked dozens of times).
Third, look up "9/11" via your favorite search engine.
Fourth, go to your local library; there are plenty of 9/11-based books.
Regardless, be aware that not everything you read on the web or anywhere else is factual, and some may have political slants that may distort the truth, and some may be just plain ignorant.

Two planes were hijacked by terrorists. Those planes were intentionally flown into the twin towers in New York, resulting in the collapse of both buildings..
There was another plane taken, this one headed for Washington D.C., but the passengers of that one rose up against the terrorist and crashed the plane into a field in order to stop them.
