I've heard that it was a couple times, but does anyone know for sure?

Well, sort of but not really.

The Native Americans did not have written language and 'Cheyenne' is what the French explorers wrote down on paper from the name being pronounced verbally.

So it's a French 'interpretation' of a Native word.

Huh? Cheyenne is a translation of a Native American word (shahiyena) and the name of an entire Native American people. A tribal name. Unless they emigrated from France, there is absolutely no way the word has any French ties whatsoever. I fear you've been mislead.
