Here it is step by step.

Creating A Log On Password For Windows XP

Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.

Then click on the Control Panel icon located in the right column of the Start Menu.

If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, then begin by clicking on the Start Button.

Then click on Settings, then click on the Control Panel icon to open up the Control Panel.

Now, Double click on the User Accounts icon to open up the User Accounts window.

Then click on the User Account that you want to create a password for.

Then click on the Create a password link on the left side of the screen.

Windows will ask you to Type a new password and also ask you to confirm it.

Type your Password in both areas and then you can also type in a password hint as well.

Now click on the Create Password button at the bottom of the screen to save your changes.

Windows will then ask you if want to make your files and folders private.

You can decide according to the provided information and then click on your choice.

Your password will be saved and you will need to enter it the next time you start your system.

Now close the User Accounts window and the Control Panel window to return back to your session.

Depending on how savvy you and your kids are...

There are some prorams that you can get such as Net Nany and CyberCop which are specifically designed for parents to control, restrict and monitor their kids browsing habits. However, a savvy kid could disable them and I don't know how old or savvy yours are.

You could also create a serperate login for them and disable internet access entirely. Set a secure password on your own account and do not give them the password. Set screensaver on your account and to go off after a few minutes of inactivity to ask for a password so that they can't sit down when you get up to stretch your legs...

Depending on what version of Windows you are running..you can set group policy throughout the computer as well and enable logging so that you can monitor their activity and restrict it. Upgrading to Win2003 would increase your capability to do this but you can do enough with XP.

You can also block internet access within mcafee firewall .. by going into the firewall preferences and blocking by application..

If you use a multi-layered approach like this (meaning not just one but a combination) they will hopefully give up trying to get around it. However, having a good talk with them can do wonders too.

You'll have to password protect the whole computer, or go buy a net-nanny type of program that will allow you to restrict the internet only. If you have Windows XP, hit Start => Control Panel => User Accounts to set up a password.

Go into the control panel and set up a password protected user account. They'll have to have the password to log in.

when you connect to the net there should be a window pop up with your username and password in. if remeber password is ticked you don't need to input the password. Untick it and each you want to connect you will need to enter the password. If your kids know the password change it and don't tell them it

3rd party software and/or hardware.

Some ISP have programs that can control the amount of time, or the actual tiems that they can have access to the internet. Start there. It should be free from your ISP.

If not, here are a couple of software ideas that might help.

And hardware...

Don't give them the password to your computer. They can't get in without it.
