My husband's cousin named their baby Jack, but I would like to name our baby Jackson, if it is a boy. We probably wouldn't call him Jack for short. We rarely see the cousin and his family, maybe only once a year. They would also have different last names. Is that copying too much? Would you be offended if you were the cousin?

Jackson and Jack are two distinct names, so there really shouldn't be any problem. It would be ridiculous if your husband's cousin accused you of "stealing" the name, especially if you plan on sticking to calling your son Jackson. You should follow your heart and pick the name you love; however, if you are very concerned, you may want to have an honest talk with the cousin, tell him your name choice, and assure him that it's not your intention to step on any toes and that there's room enough for both a Jack and a Jackson in the family.

I think Jackson is a good first name for a boy. I have a 2nd cousin named Jackson and they don't call him Jack. I don't think it's copying at all.

Well I suppose "copying" would be using the exact same name (or at least planning to shorten it to Jack), but I'd be more concerned about the literal implications here, since Jackson means "son of Jack" (obviously). Not a deal-breaker, if you love the name, but it seems worse than simply copying in my mind. Now if your husband, father or grandfather was named John or Jack, then I'd find the connection much more appealing. Just a bit too odd for me, personally, in this case.

Does anyone ever pay any attention to what a name means anymore? Like it or not, "Jackson" means "Son of Jack" just as much as "egregious" means "conspicuous or distinguished." I wouldn't worry about "copying" a name. Family names often are the same. I'd concern myself more with my kid having a name that simply doesn't make any sense, provided your husband isn't named Jack, too.

No. Honestly there are so many people with names that I like I'll probably "copy" one or another but if you rarely see the guy than go for it. Are you sure you love the name Jackson? It's really a common for babies right now! I don't really like it myself, reminds me of Michael Jackson *shudders*

I would name my kid Jackson even if a relative had the same name. I LOVE the name Jackson and you can even spell it Jaxson and call him Jax. That is so cute. Do what makes you happy and if you like the name - use it! Don't worry about his cousin being offended.

Not at all, if anything your cousin should take it as a compliment that you decided to name your child Jackson. Personally, I like Jackson better than Jack anyways : )

We are naming our firstborn son Kevin Jackson after my hubby (he wants a junior, lol) we have decided to use his middle name Jackson so there is no confusion. We were also going to call him Jack after his grandfather. Another nickname you could use for Jackson is Jax.

You are the one having to live with this kid his whole life. Who cares if a relative you hardly see has a "simular" name. Do what you feel you like. Don't compromise the name over that. If you don't plan to call him Jack then don't sweat it! If they are offended that is their problem.
