It's called eyeblack, and it is indeed intended to help reduce glare. Personally, I think a lot of players use it because it makes them look more hardcore.

It's called eye black.
Eye black is a grease applied under the eyes to reduce glare. It is often used by baseball and American football players, where sunlight or stadium lights can impair vision of an airborne ball. Traditional grease consists of beeswax, paraffin, and carbon.[1] Patented antiglare stickers that emulate the grease are also manufactured, sometimes with a sports team logo printed on. According to Paul Lukas of ESPN.com, the earliest known instance of a player wearing eye black is Washington Redskins fullback Andrew Farkas, who apparently came up with the idea on his own in 1942.

It's simply called "eye black". It's a a grease consisting of beeswax, paraffin, and carbon. There are stickers that look like black bad-aids that are supposed to do the same thing, which is to reduce glare from the sun or from stadium lights.
Some aircraft operators used to paint the upper half of the noses of their planes just below the windshield believing that this would reduce glare in the cockpit.

I've always just heard it called "eye black" It absorbs light to help keep the glare from the sun or stadium lights out of their eyes.

It attracts the sun cause it's so dark so therefore the sun isn't in the players eyes.

My brother and his team used burnt cork when he played in the 70's. Reduces sun glare off the upper cheeks.

its called eye black and its so players dont have to wear sunglasses while out in the field it keeps the sun out of there eyes
