Buddy of mine conserned about AOL convo. can n e one give him some info to help him know wat canor cant happen?
someone IMed my buddy and said they were gonna give his IP adress to the police to get him in trouble over a convo. wat i dont get is A. how did they get IP address and B. wat could they do to him (just in general answer i dont wanna get into specifics about the convo and i dont even know wat it was about n e way). he has good protection on his fire wall and virus. this person said the police were on their way a few days ago, this person said they were doin paper work (he doesnt know wat on) and that it was this person's job to get people like him in trouble online. sound really wierd to me. ithink this person was eiither just pullin a mean joke or couldnt get him in trouble and nothin will happen. thanks for the answers.

Nothing happened to my buddy for 3 weeks. But yest. in front of his neighboors house their was an investigater from the PD.should he worry?

A) getting an IP address is simple, it can be taken from emails, logged automatically, any number of ways.

B) There is no general answer, it depends on what the conversation was about. If it involved claiming to paln to assisnate the president? The IP address can be given to the police, who can subpeona his physical address from the ISP

In so much as the investigator, who was he there to see? Him or the neighbor? If it was the neighbor, then maybe he should ask the neighbor.

Lesson to be learned here, is that online conversations, emails etc, CAN in fact come back to haunt you.
