I have a Targus pad that the laptop sits on and it had two cooling fans - powered by a USB connection. Works pretty well. One thing is to make sure that where you are sitting the laptop you are not blocking any vents - in or out. If it has vents on the bottom and you set it on a soft surface you can block the air flow.

Just go to any computer shop and look for Notebook Cooling Pad/Fan. It can be connected to USB for Power and it blow the Cool Air Directly onto the Bottom of yr Note boon /Lap Top.

How old is the laptop? Are the fans running? Get a can of pressurized and clean the vents out. Don't let the laptop run if the fans are not running, you will have worst problems.

Your best bet is a laptop cooler board. Two reasons for it:
1) It helps keep heat down
2) I t minimizes the amount of pressure you put on the motherboard when you bend it. Yes, it actually bends a bit when you are using it on anything but a flat surface.
Here is a link to a style of cooler that you should consider:
http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10001&prodCatType=1&catalogId=10051&productId=102485&cmArea=SC3:CG6:DP401:CL142670
that kind has fans built in that use your lappy's USB ports.
