My brother in law was complaining about severe handling problems with his older Explorer so I went for a ride with him and don't know how he was able to maintain control. It was all over the road, especially when going over any kind of bump.I looked it over and found that the two front sway bar links had broken and were missing. If you don't know what they are, they connect the ends of the sway bar to the suspension and are visible by looking under the front.
He took it to a friend who replaced them for about $150 and it now drives like new.I also heard that Ford has some sort of quiet campaign related to this and may do the repair under warranty.
Good luck and be careful

Maybe the wheels need rebalancing or realignment.
Your friend could be right too.
The best thing to do is go to a mechanic.
Rebalancing and realignment of the wheels is the easiest to fix.
Has it always been ok before this happened?
It is only when you are driving a used vehicle that is worrisome.
Were it ever totalled in an accident and rebuilt with used parts? That scenario is scary.

Problem in the front end of the car. Idler arm, steering arm, universal joints, "A" frame bushings. A frame bushings wear and cause the problem you describe. Bad shocks and bad tires cause minor problems. Get this checked immediately. You could lose a wheel and have a serious accident. Good Luck.

I'm not a mechanic, but I've had a lot of car problems. I had a similar problem once and it turned out to be a wheel bearing.

i would check the front end linkages, tie rods, drag link, pitman arm. from what you describe you may have severe wear in one or more of them. this is dangerous and should be checked out ASAP. also possible causes - ball joints, sway bar, wheel bearings

Sounds like a serious safety issue that you can't ignore anymore without risking your life or other driver's lives. I would take it to a front end alignment specialty shop where they specialize in front end work and alignments. Don't hesitate. Do it tommorrow.
