My good friend's bday is next week and her boyfrend is buying her a spa treatment at a resort as a present. He wrote me a beg email saying she really wants me to go with her and since we exchange gifts anyway, if I go then that can be my present to her. I replied ok

I looked up the hotel he wants to take her to and the least expensive thing is $150, and the spa is not my thing, I dont like laying there for hours while people poke at me. we wouldnt even get to be in the same room during the treatment. I feel if I tell her now, she'll be upset with me and pull the "its my bday, you should do what I want" act. I know I shoud of said no to begin with but too late now.

Is there a compromise to this situation? I was thinking of saying to her, "this is pretty expensive and we wouldnt even get to be together. Can I take you for a pedicure and drinks instead? I will still go with you and lay by the pool while you are in the spa if you want someone to bewith you"

What do you think?

I see your point. $150 is expensive.

I think you should be honest. Just tell her that you know that you made the commitment, but that the spa does not fit into your budget right now and you would love to take her to lunch/movies/whatever afterward. The pedicure and drinks sounds like a great idea. I don't see how anyone can say 'no' to that!

If she is really your friend, she won't want you to waste your money.

Hope this helps.

No real, true, good friend would insist that someone go broke just because it's her birthday.

So - look at this friend again and decide if she's really worth the effort.

Screw up the courage and tell her right out that you simply can't afford a spa vacation and yes, suggest a manicure and drinks - at your LOCAL nail salon please - at a later date.

If she balks then kindly withdraw your invitation - and your friendship. If she's that shallow - she's not worth it.

i think if you explain to her that its expensive and you wont be able to be together while it happens then whats the point. plus you should give her or spend time with her how you want to.
i would just talk to her....
