The production of the Ford Edsel. And the movie Ishtar. Both of those can safely be called disasters.
Some of the floods of the Yellow River in China have killed hundreds of thousands of people. Those are a good set of disasters for you. The many cyclones that routinely kill thousands in Bangladesh are also a very nice choice.

9/11 tragedy? Major Disaster? It was an attack on the United States of America! Cowards always breed cowards and there is nothing we can do about that. Just like the back stabbin Japanese during Pearl Harbor. It's like being sucker punched by an old friend.

Hurricane Camille, the one that we Mississippians used to compare every hurricane to until Katrina came. It hit as a Category 5, with winds over 200 MPH. It killed over 250 people. Actually, it could be said that it killed more, since in the days before Katrina, many people said, "Well, this never (flooded/was damaged/fell/drowned) in Camille, so I don't think that Katrina could do that." Of course, many were wrong, which is sad.

I wouldn't classify 9/11 as a disaster anymore than Pearl Harbor was. They were attacks by enemies of our country.

Are you just looking for non-natural disasters? Cause the Tsunami that hit India is one of the largest tragedies that has happened in our life time. Around 230,000 people dead... yeah I would say that one was a major disaster.

Since you said history and didn't give a time frame, how about the volcanic eruption that buried Pompeii? With that one, it happened quick like 9/11. No warning to the populace. The heat and flames were intense.
