There are so many factors that determine whether the economy is vibrant and healthy or sluggish and depressed. In their article, "Warning Signs and Defining Economic Moments" by Vikas Bajaj and Jeremy Peters of The New York Times, the authors highlight and explain the cause and effect relationship of many of these factors including seemingly trifles such as whether or not a customer buys a dessert or orders a beverage instead of simply water at a restaurant.

Two ominous signs that are harbingers of a pending downturn in the economy are reduced total employment of the current working age population and the decline in consumer spending in recent months. Furthermore, Wall Street is now putting the risk of recession at about one in three, significantly higher than earlier this year.

Exacerbating these factors is the decline to a previously torrid housing boom, especially in the sunbelt states of the south and southwest. But now, home prices are falling, loans are getting harder to get and home equity borrowing is falling off.

On a positive note however, the current downward pressures are being offset by a prosperous global economy that is contributing significantly to an increase in exports. And just as optimistic is the fact that consumer spending is unlikely to slow as long as hourly wages remain at least 1.5 percent above the normal inflation rate of 3 percent.
