I work in a bookstore and I should know this. lol I think it is just a fictional book as compared to a series which is a fictional story written in more than one book.

Make sense?
Novel = 1 story in 1 book
Series = 1 story continuted in 2 or more

*ok cheated and looked it up...
Novel = a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length and complexity, portraying characters and usually presenting a sequential organization of action and scenes.

Whereas a book is more generalized and can mean any book whether short, long, fiction, or non-fiction.

Books include anything that resembles a book, including encyclopedias, text books, manuals, and such. A novel is a specific type of book, a literature book. The interesting one is the "graphic novel." It's full of pictures, like a comic book, but typically longer, and I suppose the novel part is the heavy investment in plot/story driven writing.

Generally speaking, a "book" is a set of pages bound together, which, combined, form an entity that one may read for pleasure or education (or both!). Of course, it has also been known to be used to level wobbly chairs and tables, as well as a weapon, usually aimed at wayward husbands! ;)

Generally speaking, a "novel" is a fictional story, which does not, necessarily, have to be in the form a book.

I hope you will give me credit on your homework assignment (speaking of books: there are no dictionaries at home, school, or on the web that you could find?). ;)
