People these days don't say go to the 'machine' we barley even talk to each other face to face. The new generation these days are more about the texting than referring to the 'machine'. Kids don't even care about learning, so how would they know it's even called to the 'machine' i call it the computer or in my case the lab top. My dad builds Chips at Maxim and he refers to it as the computer, or that thing over there!!!

Well, they could be doing that for laughs. I like to refer to my tv and a television machine and I'll never stop annoying HS kids by referring to computers as an Electronic Brain, which is actually what they called them in the 1950's. Do they know I'm joking or do they really think I'm that much of an antique? Hey,keep 'em guessing.

I work in IT so I get that kind of stuff all the time. After a while it stopped making me cringe.

I still get a chuckle when people try to pass them off as savvy and throw words around that they have no clue about. They just use them because you did. If I'm feeling especially evil, I'll use a non-sense word and see how long before they pick it up.

Me - "Well obviously your problem is mixleplick isn't calibrated". In-DUH-vidual - "You know I had a feeling it was the mixleplick".

Oh, you think that's something? I once had to teach an annoying, know-it-all, older gentleman how to use a computer. He didn't want others to know he knew nothing, so he told passersby, "Yeah, these flat screen TV's are really nice! And the revolution on them is excellent!" (He was talking about the reSolution of the flat screen MONITOR) And when I tried to explain the icons and what they meant, he proceeded to tell me that the Bible says were aren't to make icons or any other idols. He alway made me tired.

It depends, the word "machine" used to be a very accurate description of early computers and some people still see them that way.
Also many people will use the term to describe anything that is a collection of components, whether they are mechanical or not.

I don't know if that's so bad -- I sometimes call mine a "machine" in a colloquial sense.
Kind of like calling your car your "wheels."
It has its place.

Of course, I sometimes call my computer "useless piece of junk," too.....
