I used to play a game called Sid Meier's Pirates. It is based in the Carribean and the game designers tried their best to make the game map match the real world map. The area of the Bermuda Triangle is littered with coral reefs and small islands. I hated whenever I had to go into that area. I just knew that a storm would come along and push me into a reef and take out my ship. I knew this because it happened on a regular basis (in the game of course).

That part of the world has quite a few navigational traps. Nasty currents, shallows and corals, unexpected storms(or hurricanes), and the odd pirate (or drug runner) or two. I would be more suprised if there were not people and ships that went missing in that area from time to time. Even so, there really is not too much of a mystery about the place. Even the rate of disappearances is not out of whack when compared to other places of the world. Modern navigational instruments and better trained sailers have no problems in there at all. These days, when you do hear of someone going missing, it is a private individual who was not properly trained or did not have the correct equipment or did not have a properly maintained boat or just did not have the proper boat.

There is no mystery. I have flown into and over the area many times. It is an area with high boat, ship, and aircraft traffic. Accidents are bound to happen. The are countless shallow reefs and atolls that are a hazard to ships. Add the tropical storms and it isn't surprising accidents happen.

I've heard of theories of rougue waves. Waves that form in the open ocean and become massive due to additional energy. They can appear in calm water in over turn large ships. Apparently the bermuda triangle is a good place for these waves to occur.

No, thats just nuts. Yes Rogue waves exist, usually one out of ever 10,000 or so if I remember some ancient oceanography class. There are areas where they are more common. And yes, they can basically come out of nowhere and do serious harm.

No portal, no other dimension, just poor navigation, IMO
