it is possible that you are working in an area of high intensive electro-magnetic radiation caused by a combination of hard-drives, mobile phones, microwaves etc
The radiation can cause the silver (assuming the crucifx is silver) pendant clasp to melt and re-solder itself after work - however you would need to be sat inside a nuclear reactor for this to happen.

you may be forgetting to close
the loop that connects it to the
chain properly, use pliers
