That just may have been an emotional issue too heavy for her to handle at this stage in her development, and of course, she didn't know how to tell you that without seeming shallow. There are people who can talk to you about these types of things (some within your peer group, and still others who are older professionals). I strongly urge you to seek them out and talk as much and as often as you need to. Deeper still, your mother may also be able to talk candidly with you about her perspective on things she is dealing with, and her hopes for your future. As for the friend, sometimes our friends can be categorized into different groups: those that are only capable of "fluff" type subject matter, and those that connect to you on a nearly spiritual level....both types have their value, you just have to recognize who belongs in which category. Good luck to you, and God bless you and your family.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. She will get better, but in the meantime, she really needs you. The reason why your friend bailed out on you when you needed her the most is because of the situation that you are going through with your mom and she feels that she cannot be a good friend to you. Talk to her about the situation and get to the bottom of it. Ask her why did she bail out on you. Make sure that you give her an opportunity to explain herself. Whatever you decide to do- whether if you want to continue to be friends with her or not- is entirely up to you. Good luck.
