You should never wear oversized jackets and ankle length skirts. The best length of skirt for anyone over 25 is about knee length. Invest in classic styles of clothes and you'll fit in any where.

Your clothes should fit your feelings. If u always feel like a school girl, u should present yourself that way. U don't have to wear granny clothes just because of how old u r. Of course, when u reach an age, it can be funny wearing a school uniform! But those light, bright and fun clothes will always keep the look of a young person, physically and mentally.
As u said, there is a motherly type. It's called "motherly", because women get fatter after giving birth, and then they need larger sizes and longer "more decent" clothes.
THIS IS ONLY RIGHT IF U GIVE BIRTH AFTER THE AGE OF...40 FOR EXAMPLE:
OK, the point of this is, u should wear what u feel like wearing But after a certain age, after giving birth, in order not to look like a non-stylish person, that tries to make itself look younger with the help of clothes and doesn't know what's right for it's age, u should start wearing longer skirts, and not too too tight and sort of slutty trousers.
But that doesn't mean u should let yourself be a careless person when fashion is in question! Wear sweet clothes! Sexy! That's an advantage of being older, by that I mean not being a school girl. U will never look like a stupid little girl that tried to seduce a guy unsuccessfully, u will look like a real sexy mature girl, let's say woman.
Hope I helped!
Lots of kisses!
xoxo

I can't think of anyone stylish who wears oversized jackets and ankle-length skirts. That style hit the wall in 1992.
I would be more concerned about dressing in age-appropriate fashions that fit well. You haven't mentioned your age, profession, hobbies, or size, so it is difficult to determine what might work best. However, pencil skirts, fitted blazers, boot-cut denim in a dark wash, ruffled blouses, and pumps are classy, trendy, and suitable for most situations.
I'm in my early thirties, but I look much younger, and I find that dressing in suits - however stylish - makes me look like a kid playing house. I stick to two-piece outfits that mix and match. Avoid anything overly trendy, and wear patterns with caution.
It might sound cheesy, but try watching a few episodes of What Not to Wear. Clint and Stacey have great advice for any age, style, and profession.

Well, just wear what you look good in. I have seen mothers of high school kids still wearing fancy dresses and they suits them very well.

Just dress age-appropriately in properly-sized clothes. You don't have to look frumpy and matronly because you are a mother.
