The phase I hear the most is "make a difference in the world". It is the idea that helping others is somehow our purpose for being here. For those who reject God, it is just a way of gaining self praise.

Actually, that would be MOTHER LOVE, because almost every female of every species feel this towards their offspring.
The exceptions would be cold-blooded creatures who lay eggs.
Most mammals experience strong and imperative mother love for their offspring.
