I've seen this in a Lara Croft movie where she found something which was called 'mati' which in Greek means eye and showed you the way to Pandora's Box. Is it a true myth or is it just made up for the movie? By the way, if it's true, then can you tell me who created it? Thanks.

No, it's not true. The myth is a story around a "container" that was never meant to be opened, ending as soon as this thing happens (with hope the only thing remaining inside, blah blah -see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/pandora ).

The choice of the word "mati" is at least hilarious! *
"Mati" means "eye" in modern Greek and the word did not exist in the times of Alexander the Great and much long after him. **

* I would expect common logic from the movie translator... It's Greek and Ancient Greek, like there's American English, British English, Old English etc.

The version I got in Intro to Greek Mythology is that Pandora's 'jar' was actually a metaphor for her womb. She was created by Zeus, with the help of some other gods as a punishment for mankind, and as something to set against the fire which Prometheus gave them. So basically, she comes down from Olympus with her "jar" (aka womb) as a trap for men, spreads her legs and out come all the diseases, curses, hatred and jealousy. But what especially sucks is that Hope is still in there, trapped in her womb!! So the only hope for Men is to keep having sex with women in the hopes of having children. IOW, Pandora is basically the original 'Women, can't live with them, can't live without them.' archetype.

Why would anyone want to find an empty "Pandora's Box." The myth ends with only hope left in the box, and since is all most of the present day world has, I'm sure that Hope was also released at some point of time. The Box is nothing special, and unprovable for value, only its contents were of interest to the world.

I've been a student of Greek mythology all my life and I never heard of such a thing. But yes "mati" is Greek for eye (pl. matia).
