The "punishment" meted out by Commissioner Goodell doesn't hurt the Patriots. Instead of spending money on unproven draft picks they can now use the money to spend on sought after free agents.

If anything, it's the draftees who get hurt. There will be one less player drafted in either the 1st, 2nd or 3rd round.

Yea that is true.

It probably does hurt the pats in some way just because your first round pick is that much more important. If they don't make the playoffs they will lose their second and 3rd rounders, and I think that saves them even more money to be honest.

It wasn't even the Pats who got hit with the biggest fine, it was the coach. Honestly it was a written rule that they would get fined and lose draft picks, but in the long run, this might help them.

Your bring up a great point and I love this question. I still think even if the pats had the draft pick, they still would have gotten half the players they went after anyway.

Good luck!!

First, saying draft pick retractions doesn't hurt is silly. It's a permanant penalty. Think about no Vince Wilfork, Richard Seymour, or Ben Watson. All huge first day draft picks that are an integral part of the team now.

Second, Kraft can't cover Bellichick's fine. It was stipulated in the letter. The Pats got a fine of $250,000 additionally anyway.

Finally, saying the last 3 draftees are "hurt" is BS. you don't even know who they are, how good they are, or if they would have even gotten signed. Think about how many kids get drafted. That's a silly arguement.

This whole thing has been blown so far out of proportion, it's crazy. Teams steal signals ALL THE TIME, and will continue to do so going forward, just without a camera. You realize binoculars are still allowed to spy signals, and it's completely legal to do so, right?

It may hurt them more than you think. Ask any team's general manager and I think he'd agree. If you look at past history teams that take a lot of free agents don't normally do really well. Teams that mainly focus on draft picks normally do better year in and year out.

And I think teams normally pay a higher amount for free agents than for drafts because you are paying for experienced players. Going after free agents is kind of like bidding on an item in an auction. It typically goes for a higher price than what you'd normally buy it at.

With all of the free agents that New England picked up this year they were making a really risky move. And due to the high cost it could hurt them later down the road from the carry-over of that money regarding the salary cap.

If I was a free agent, I wouldn't look at New England in quite the same light as before. I'm not saying I wouldn't play for them, but I wouldn't be quite so willing to sign with them as one would think with a team with that pedigree.

Also, if you look at FA, generally, there're very few worthwhile players on the market, as generally team lock up thier most important assets. Sometimes, due to scheme, cap, or depth, a team will let a "star" go, but it is typically slim pickings. FAs also tend to be older. Really, if I was running a team, I'd rather have 2nd&3rd round picks. Every team needs depth and new players, and the draft is often the cheapest way to do it. You have to look beyond the obvious impact as well: the Patriots lose valuable trade fodder either way, and their options in that matter will be very limited...

The Patriots are doing what the Eagles have tried to do and failed miserably at. They (the Pats) are the main acceptable of the NFL. Letting call gamers circulate is correct to the only element New England and Philly have in consumer-friendly, however the Patriots have been efficient at it. right here in Philly we get dealt with like idiots and no large Bowl titles to instruct for it. So have confidence the Patriots, they are in a position to't win it each and every 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. it quite is in basic terms retooling and that i anticipate yet another identify interior of three seasons for them. i do no longer like it any further than you do, even even with the shown fact that it is the wonderful thank you to proceed to be aggressive and win titles in those circumstances.

yeah, and a lot of people fail to remember that the Pats have San Fran's first round pick this year also....

...New England should have a better record than SF, which means the Pats will still have a first round draft pick.

The one they get to keep will be higher then the one they lost!

This whole thing is a joke. Wade Wilson takes HGH to help him with diabetes. He is an asst. coach and he gets a five game suspension. What he did has no bearing on a football game. Head Coach Billichek cheats and has a direct bearing on the game and he gets hit with a fine ,which billionaire owner Robert Kraft will probably pay for him. It's a joke. I like what Goodell has done so far , but he dropped the ball on this.
