It should do them, and you may not even realise they are being done. Maybe theres another reason why your compu is running slow.
I got a book from which people that has a section in it about compus running slow and what to do. Here is an extract of what it says...it maybe will help you to find an alternative route for cleaning...
It might be easier for you to get a copy of the booklet. Its called EASY USE PC GUIDE... YOU CAN GET THE BOOKLET BY CALLING THEM ON 0800 380 380
Thye sometimes send them by email, but I ordered one like that and it did not get to me, so you may want to go with the phone call and postal option. Its a book worth having as it has allsorts of different help stuff in it.

Another option to look at is GEEKSQUAD.COM. They also send email correspondence out to people so as to help them with all sorts of problems.

You could also try in the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMMES section and see if theres anything in there that you done still use. DONT uninstall anything you are unsure of though. There is a wizard option with this programme.
You can also use WINDOWS DISK CLEANUP by going thru Start>All programmes>system tools> and choose disk cleanup. It will run for a few moments, then present a list of progs that could be removed, grouped by type. The ones witht the ticked boxes already are the ones that are completely safe to remove already. Others can be removed if you choose to.

Theres also a disk fragmenter. Go start>all progs>accessories>system tools> disk defragmenter. Highlight the drive you want and click ANALYZE. A window appears 2 say whether defrag is necessary. If it is click on it to do so. This can take minutes or hours depending on how much there is to defrag!!

You should also keep the compu up to date. This is done by start>all progs>accessories >system tools>security centre. Check that auto updates ois ON. (If its not, then click on 'manage security setting 4 auto updates) Put a tick in automatic in the new screeen that appears.

Make sure your firewall is kept up to dayte.

Make sure you have spyware & anti virus etc.,

Try
www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware
This is a free programme.

Its well worth getting the book that I have got this info from. You may wait a few days for its arrival, but compared to the advice you get, its well worth the wait!!!!!!!!

Download a free program called Lavasoft Ad-Aware Personal and run it. It will bring up cookies and any adware or spyware you have for deleting. Then you choose what you want to do with everything. Delete cookies and quarentine everthing else. If your comp is working fine over the next few days then the items quarentined are probably ok to delete. There is also a nice little program called Eusing Free Registry cleaner, just run this program and fix anything that comes up. Back up your regestry first just in case, but I have got rid of a load of crap on mine with no problems.

Deleting cookies and temp files is "invisible"--it won't look like it is doing anything. There may not be any cookies or temp files to remove at this time.

Check the Task Manager to see if there are any process taking up lots of memory or if something is running in the background, such as "winword" being open but Word itself isn't open.

Just press delete all and wait. If you haven't cleared them on a regular basis it could take a while.
Go to 'my computer' and check the disk clean up,that will show if you have ant temp files and also let you get rid
A defrag may do it a power of good

Do not delete your prefetch all the time. Your computer will take longer to start if you do that. Doing it once a month is ok but not every day. Using Ccleaner is a good idea or Steganos Security Suite.

Try using CCleaner. It gives you more flexibility on which temp files you want to clean, and you can fix registry issues etc also.
