Legal? I don't believe so. Unethical, no.
Of course, what is Legal and what is ethical has been on a divergent path for years. ( on many issues)
There are hardware devices out there for around $100 that allow you to record your vinyls directly to a computer via a usb cable. There are cheaper ways about it though, a simple cord from the output of your record player to the input of your sound card and you can record it that way.

That depends on how strong your ethics are. But, if you're looking at it from a legal standpoint, then read on.
Technically, yes. I can't remember the name of the organization that is busting people for downloading music, but if they did catch you, you would most likely be facing a fine or some penalty.
Even though you could hook up a turntable (thru an amp or receiver) to your computer thru the line in jack and record the song into an MP3 or .wav file. That would be perfectly legal. It is actually the same outcome as downloading the song of the web, but you'd have a better quality result from recording it on your own.
What I think they are looking at is the vinyl album that you own is not in a digital format, it's analog. Even though it's the same exact song. It's the difference in format that they consider. I know, it doesn't make any sense to me either.
For me, I have hooked up my turntable to my computer and have recorded dozens or vinyl record albums. They have turned out great. The quality of some of the stuff you download just isn't that great. Some of it is crap!!

I think NOT, but legally you MAY be breaking the law. I too own many vinyl records and would like to find SOME of it to down load and I can't find allot of what I would like. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate an E- Mail

That's a good question. I've wondered something kind of like that: if I bought a CD before but it got broken or something, would it still be considered wrong to download?
I have to say no. You've already paid for it. That should give you free license to it forever. After all, you don't pay every time you listen to a CD. You only pay once.

Not unethical, but with the way Copyright law is written, it is illegal. You are paying for a single copy of the song (or album as it may be). Typically you are allowed to make copies for archival purposes, but if you're downloading it from limewire or somewhere like that (P2P) it's illegal.

If you bought it at all ever, and you arent selling it to someone else, I dont see how that can be wrong at all. All you are doing is changing the media that it is on.

While I don't have a real ethical issue with it, it is still illegal.
