The use a hybrid fiber coax system. They run fiber optic cable from the headend to each node. Each node serves 500 to 2000 homes. At the node, it is converted from light to RF (radio frequency) and goes from fiber optic cable to coaxial cable. This is the same design of cable that you have coming into your home, just a much larger diameter. So the large coaxial cable passes by each home. A tap is installed in the larger coax cable where the small common coax cable attaches and goes into your home.

The trunk lines are all fiber optic, which is much faster than any 100base5 or 1000base6 cable can ever be.
