30 years of determined future with lots of problems and limited freedom - why would you want this?

You certainly don't have to do either (get a 30-year mortgage, or have children.) But you asked why anyone would do it--so I'll answer that.
I had children (I have eight of them) because I'm egotistical enough to believe that my genes, and those of my dear wife, are important to keep in the gene pool. If only stupid people have children, the coming generations will have real problems--and surely there are a lot of stupid people having children.
I took out a mortgage because I couldn't find another way to purchase a house to provide for the lifestyle my wife and I wanted. I'd rather not have a mortgage, but I wanted to live beyond my ability to provide for it. To do that, I paid most of my money to interest.
Had I to do it over, I'd have had more children, and a smaller mortgage.
But, I did it because I feel it was worth it. I'm now fifty-one years old. I think it was money well spent, and a great investment in the future.

I would much rather pay a mortgage on a home that is mine, then pay for an apartment that I would never get a return on my investment. At least with a home, if you sell at the right time you can get all the money you have put into it back, plus more. And children are a personal choice. Just because you have a home and children does not mean you will have a lot of problems and limited freedom.

I would say that you are a very selfish person. First off, I love my daughter and hope to have atleast one more child. I do have a mortgage. Children are not problems. Mortgages are not problems. You think that because someone is trying to raise a family and buy a house and land that it leads to limited freedom. Freedom is the reason why I have a mortgage and a child. Who wouldnt want this. Are you from the United States of America?

Because when you buy a house in the US, you get to deduct the mortgage interest on your taxes. You also OWN that house - it's yours to decorate and paint and do whatever you want with it. Assuming you have a fixed rate mortgage, the principal and interest payment will not change. (Taxes and insurance will, however) Your principal and interest payment will be the same now, in 10 years, in 25 years. Take a wild guess what your rent will be in 25 years.

Kids - that's another story. They can soak up money faster than a house, but then, they can make you proud to be their parent, too. When you get older, you can make a better informed decision about this.

I think your question is why would anyone want a mortgage and children which would equal a marriage. The answer would be because some people like that sort of thing.

Because some people would rather own they're own home than to help a landlord pay his off. As far as the children go, speaking just for myself here... Yes there are stressful times while raising children, but in the end these are human beings well and able to carry on your existance well after you are gone. They are something to be proud of. Someone that will be able to help you as you grow older just as you did to bring them up. I am very proud of all of my children and grand children alike and nothing on this earth could ever make me believe that it was ever a mistake to have them.

What a negative attitude. Its a choice but to have a child and own a home can be very rewarding. You should take joy in your children and a home can be a financial investment for your future. It isn't cheap or easy but you provide and hope when your children grow up and your old and feeble they do the same and take care of you.

It is a standard course in life. The house is a cornerstone. You have a place to live and property you can call your own. Kids are our desire to spread our DNA.
