How often a pet should be fed depends on the species and specific animal. Pets get overweight by being over fed, fed a high-fat or high-calorie food, getting too many treats, and not getting enough exercise.

Male cats have a tendancy to become overweight after getting neutered. They no longer have a drive to be active (sometimes its hard to get them to play). Overfeeding is another cause. Not all animals can only be feed twice a day. I leave a food bowl out all day for my 2 cats (one's a kitten the other a older, neutered male, who is overweight to a degree).
With a ferret, you should leave food in their bowl all day because they have such a short digestive tract and a high metobolic rate.
It really depends upon the animal and how much they eat. If they don't get enough exercise, they may become overweight. They do make cat, dog, and some ferret food in different age groups. This can help them get the diet and nutrition they need.

Usually it's from treats and sharing table food, and also not enough exercise. Some dogs need more exercise than others. Treats should be severely limited and only healthy ones given.
Pets also usually gain a bit after they are "fixed". Many food companies make food for overweight pets, though.

Their owners feed them too much and don't exercise them, or they are fed things which are not good for them and make them fat, such as table scraps. Once in a while, some dogs or cats will develop medical problems which will predispose them to obesity. Diabetes is one of these, and both cats and dogs can get it. Other problems include hypo and hyperthyroidism, and the animal versions of Cushings and Addison's diseases. But in general, if a dog or cat is overweight, it's because it gets fed too much food.

Some dogs may become overweight after they are spayed. They (like humans) have hormones that regulate their body. But unlike a woman who has also had her uterus removed (causing menopause) a dog will not be given hormone replacement therapy.
The best thing you can do for your dog is provide it with plenty of exercise and feed it a diet most appropriate for it. Do not feed it table scraps either.
To the answerer below: PLEASE READ THE WHOLE THING BEFORE COMMENTING ABOUT DIET I WROTE ABOUT THAT ALSO. The question was for some CAUSES of pet obesity, I suggested one of them since there was already many comments about diet.

I think there could be a variety of reasons, from health problems to greedy animals who steal food when your not looking
I have heard of a dog who eats because he wants to serve his master. He thinks his master wants him to eat, so he eats everything they give him. They give him far more than he needs, because they like spoiling him. However, the dog would be happier if he was fed only twice a day.
