Just because a monitor is bigger than the dimensions of HD resolutions, does that mean that it can display video progressively?

All PC monitors display the image progressively.

1080i is there because of the bandwidth limitation of broadcast TV signals. When you have a dedicated wired link this is not a problem.

All LCDs display video progressively. It's an inherent part of the technology.

However, keep in mind that if you intend to display high definition video from a blu-ray or hd-dvd drive, you may need to have an HDCP compliant video card and monitor. HDCP is an encryption protocol standard for hi-def video, and while you may be able to circumvent it on your computer, it's better to just go ahead and get HDCP capable equipment since the price difference is negligible.
