Why is the republican party becoming so fascist? Is this a sign of more things to come?

Scourge_of_Fascism is correct, it does go back over 25 years, 30 years to be precise.

At that time, right-wing religious coalitions were no longer satisfied with being on the outside of politics. They were organizing, building a collective voice and looking for power within the political arena. I lived in KY then, the South... Democrat, Bible Belt, pro-labor (union). Jimmy Carter was Southern, Democrat, farmer and Christian; he was "us". The Bible Belt believed they carried Carter to the White House, but they never figured he'd leave his religion at the door of the Oval Office and do a Playboy interview. :-) The South and the Mid-West Bible Belt was deeply angry and felt totally betrayed when he didn't buckle to their agenda.

The right-wing religious coalitions were angry, galvanized and homeless. At the time, the Republican Party was still the Gold(water) Standard of Conservatism (small gov't). The Republicans saw a great opportunity to increase their political base, so they welcomed the religious coalitions and Ronald Reagan happily took up their agenda. Not all Republicans were happy with their new cousins, but they liked the numbers. Goldwater was livid about it! Ironically, he was written off as stubborn (true) and obsolete (false), yet he was one of the few that saw the writing on the wall.

So, jumping to GWB's first term... we have a Republican Party that has traded 'fiscal conservatism' for 'social conservatism', and a 'morality rule' that's grown out of increased pressure from, and bowing to, the right-wing religious influence. This is what's behind Bush... a party with a strong sense of righteousness and intolerance, so his "my way, or the highway" approach fits snugly within the parameters.

Huh? Moveon publishes a nasty ad, which is their right to do so. People who claim to support the troops and demanded the President listen to his generals and not Rums field, aren't upset that the ad questions the integrity of one of those generals they approved. A newspaper that claims to report the truth and doesn't have a bias, says it charges $165K for such an ad for two days, then all of a sudden says it charges only $65K if they can run the ad when the want. So, that means the editors decided to run the ad before the general spoke?

Hypocrisy is running rampant on both sides of the aisle lately and we the public aren't happy with either group.

It's been happening for a long time. And yes, it is a sign of more to come if we elect another republican President.

Its not about fascism. Its about a bunch of liberal COWARDS telling lies about an honorable man that has dedicated his life to this country.

There are laws against that sort of thing, but since the person in question is in the military and an officer. Well then they are fair game aren't they.

I swear, you gutless cowards need to start loving your country and stop apologizing to the terrorists.

Yep - the vitriol coming from the far right for a free speech issue is disgusting.

Remember they tried to make dissent illegal by bringing back the sedition act.

They have the right to be upset about it if they want, but I question how it is any different than the Swift Boat ads attacking Kerry...they were both crap and examples of what is worng with politics.. can't stand on my own beliefs, so I'll attack the other guy.
