I expect it depends where the humans were. The main riding beasts have been camels, horses, donkeys, reindeer, oxen, elephants and (for sport) ostritches, as far as I can tell.

Horses are noted for being ridden, but I think that's because of their speed and agility; which means they were used by invading armies and to control society, whereas it was the farmers and peasants who rode the donkeys and oxen.

Elephants have also been tamed for riding (where available). I'm no expert, but I suspect they were domesticated for heavy lifting and pulling before they became a grand ride for kings and maharajahs.

Although other beasts have been captured and used (eg: lions in the arena); there is a limit to the type of creature that can be usefully ridden. They have to be able to carry the weight of a human being; they have to be controllable and biddable, and able to eat or drink what can be supplied on a journey.

I think that as soon as mankind discovered that animals could be controlled, they had a go at seeing if the larger ones would carry them. My guess is that rhinos, hippos, bears and most deer were soon deemed untameable.

The trouble is, we really don't have much evidence of which animal was successfully ridden first. By the time civilisations were making permanent records of their activities, most of the basics, like hunting, riding, eating McDonalds, etc, were already history.

I expect furs, fabrics and other softenings were used before saddles, but I could be wrong. Here's a link that will make you smile (or angry, or thoughtful): http://www.topix.net/forum/news/evolution/T51M99LP9C4H5NT1H

hi Black lashes, Thoroughbreds like to run, that's what they have continuously been regular for and what they're bred for. My uncle advance right into a coach in Md. years in the past and he continuously had strick regulations with reference to using the whip. He continuously taught that the whip advance into to get the attention of the pony, and does no longer tolerate misuse of it. right this moment, there are additionally regulations on the subject of use of the whip, and jockey's are suspended and fined if caught misusing the whip. Horses have thicker dermis than we human beings and that i'm no longer likely to assert that the whip does not harm them, and that's one element of horse racing that i individually choose they'd do away with. different than the whip, i do no longer think of that racing horses is merciless. the sport has been around for hundreds of years. If it have been a merciless game, some company would have placed an end to it by now. injuries happen in each and every game, and that's extremely unlucky, in spite of if it does happen. purely the day in the previous right this moment at Churchill Downs, a horse dumped his rider and went flying down the music. The sirens sounded to sign a unfastened horse because it continuously does. the pony collided with yet another horse on the music, and the filly had to be euthanized. it is so unhappy that this style of element occurs, in spite of if it advance into an accident and that i do no longer think of every person would have prevented it. the secret's, extra often than no longer if racing is performed precise, i do no longer think of that's merciless.

Ostriches. Egyptian ostrich racing took place long before horse racing, not as regal as horse racing but much funnier.
