Preparing to host a "Horror Movie Night" at a college. The university is really intense about movie rights because they were recently fined.

I recently found several website with long lists of Public Domain Movies.

Has anyone actually watched any Horror or Suspense movies that are now Public Domain? Which do you recomend?

...the wikipedia website, fortunately and apparently lists just about all of the films that have been deemed public domain; as I used to run a public domain-based mail order videotape business, I can pretty much tell you, with a reasonable amount of certainty, that this list is fairly accurate and up-to-date...

...being that the films list here ARE in public domain, do not expect super-wham-a-dyme remastered quality on these prints; obviously, if there was interest in investing the money in professionally remastering any of these films, the distributors would renew the copyrights on them (...although a scattered few have, in fact, been seen in a newly remastered light..."Night of the Living Dead", for example...without the process of renewing the copyright)...

...it IS difficult to recommend specific films for your purpose; there are so many unpolished gems in this fold, you'd be like a kid in a candy store; however, if I had to pick my absolute favorites, well...

"A Bucket of Blood"
"Carnival of Souls"
"City of the Dead"
"Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"
"Dementia 13"
"Devil Bat"
"The Fatal Hour" ('Mr. Wong' entry)
"Giant Gila Monster"
"House on Hauted Hill"
"The Killer Shrews"
"Last Man on Earth" (...my personal favorite)
"The Lodger" (...early Hitchcock, of course)
"Little Shop of Horrors"
"The Manster"
"Night of the Living Dead"
"Nightmare Castle"
"Phantom of the Opera"
"Plan 9 from Outer Space"
"Screaming Skull"
"Tormented"
"Vampyr"
"Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet"
"The Wasp Woman"

...if you are looking for a spefic distributor, who carries a good number of these films on DVD (...and manages to find some of the absolute very best prints, too), might I recommend the Alpha Video label, through www.oldies.com...

I've learned that if someone is in my house I must run up the stairs screaming like a total moron and lock myself in the bathroom which has no exit except into another room in which of course the crazy person will be! I love horror flicks! Actually after reading my answer I laughed to myself because about 5 months ago I was alone in my 2 story beach house when I heard someone come up the stairs and into my roommates bedroom then towards my room but they turned around and went back downstairs. When they came towards my room that's when I knew it wasn't the roommate plus I knew he was still at the party with my boyfriend. What did I do? I grabbed my phone, locked my bedroom door and locked myself in the bathroom that had no exit except back into my room while I called my boyfriend and the roommate home to check over the house. Nothing was stolen but I was pretty shook up.

Night of the Living Dead. It is public domain due to a copyright error.
