"I haven't left my home in two months," says Kulsoom, a medical student who lives in east Baghdad with her family. "

"Sunni groups who have allied themselves with the Americans in the former al-Qaeda stronghold of Anbar are not necessarily allies of the Baghdad government. Many Sunni tribesmen openly say it is a "government of Iran" controlled from Tehran."

Moqtada Sadr's Mehdi Army has continued to penetrate deeper into every aspect of life.

"Under Saddam, it was the mukhabarat [secret police] we were terrified of," says shopkeeper Ali. "Now it is the Mehdi Army. They are everywhere."

"With so little sign of permanent change, that is why so many people continue to leave Iraq - up to 20,000 a week heading to already overwhelmed Syria. "

"I am the optimistic one in my family," says Kulsoom. "But I have to admit that nothing has changed."

Why don't Conservatives just cut out the insults and deal with the facts of the matter? You will actually portray a better figure of yourselves.

due to the sanctions imposed by the UN in the early 90's, iraq had become a complete hell whole. a great deal needs to be done to restore this country, so how can anyone be surprised at the level of skepticism some have regarding the complete truthfulness/accuracy of the petreaus report.

although the UN has its share of critics, more may have been accomplished in iraq ((with the UN peace keeping efforts)) if we had not alienated them. there is still much to be done. and i feel the success of the benchmarks is contingent upon the UN's involvment.

"Washington's hope is that the UN will have a better chance of acting as a moderator both internally and externally than the US has managed so far."

"But the UN is still regarded with suspicion among some in Iraq, where it is blamed for more than a decade of sanctions before the invasion. The first major target of the insurgents in 2003 was the UN headquarters in Baghdad that killed the UN envoy, Sergio Vieira de Mello, and 21 other staff."

"The UN, like the US, will find its scope for action severely curtailed by the weakness of the Iraqi government and the frequent risk of attack. The resolution authorises the UN mission in Baghdad to "advise, support and assist the government and people of Iraq on advancing their inclusive, political dialogue and national reconciliation".

"This means trying to engineer a deal between Iraq's Shia and Sunni Muslims - an ambitious goal - as well as tackling the humanitarian crisis and organising more mundane but still awkward tasks such as carrying out a census. The new secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, is regarded by Washington as more amenable to helping the US than his predecessor, Kofi Annan, who opposed the war."

"Although the UN has wide experience in conflict resolution and tackling humanitarian crises, it will be difficult for it to have much impact in Iraq, given the scale of insecurity. The UN has only 55 staff in Iraq and the plan is to increase that by October to no more than 95."

I think we have the truth, just an administration that feels it must doctor it, amend it, tarnish it, and otherwise play smoke and mirrors to make it say what they want it to say. There were kernals of truth in the Petraeus report, just like there is truth in saying GWB IS the president, although in both counts, that is probably where the truth actually ends and the spin begins. For those who really want to see and know the truth, it is out there to be found, (yes, mostly in the foreign press, unfortunately). What we are up against, is an administration of Alfred E. Neuman's who state 'Trust Me' the whole time when not putting a spin on the truth outright covering it up. Unfortunately, the average American is more comfortable being told what to think than to put forth the effort to have a cognizant thought. It is there that we are in trouble. BIG TROUBLE. On the whole, most American's would rather live with the status quo of Big Brother Bush than to rock the boat.

OK, so what is your revelation here? The muslim community cannot get along any better than other militant religious sects. They have been in dispute in the middle east for centuries, why do you think we have to cleanse the minds, to make total peace in the region. The only hope for these people is a self governed diplomacy, but even then, as in the USA, your having favoritism to the party in power, and their electorate. The only difference is, the Koran whats blood from their enemies, not peace. Try changing their VooDoo book and your in real trouble.

From the comments here, one would have to think that there's hardly a speck of community intelligence on this planet.

So, after our country invading a sovereign nation for reasons that are admitted to have been prevarications, after thousands of our own citizens have died for this farce and many more thousands of others as well, and after spending all our funds on this thing when mere fractions of that money would resolve our medical, education and infrastructure issues, there are those of us who actually think that reports from any subset of media groups is more significant than the body of information seen as a whole!

This has to be why, if there are really UFOs out there, they aren't communicating with us. They can see it's impossible for us to get the story straight!!!

True - and you have to get away from the corporate news in the US to get an objective viewpoint on anything. It's a shame . . .
