Ask them if they just farted. If they say no, just say, "Hmm...that's weird, because when you walked up, I smelled something awful." Then ask them if they forgot to wipe...

Bath and body works and probably many other places sell peppermint-scented lip balm (they make gloss, but since you're a dude that probably isn't the right choice for you) but whatever lip balm that you can buy that has a stronger fragrance will help you because then all you will smell is your own stuff right there under your nose.
Even scented chapstick is better than nothing.
You can't be rude to customers, no matter how richly they deserve it. You need your job and besides you can help make this world a kinder, gentler place that we have to share by not being unkind.

Obviously it would be rude to suggest your customers to maintain personal hygeine. Better to explore the possibility of installing an exhaust fan or two at the point of their entrance for exaling air outside so that the stink would be sucked out before it reaches your sensitive nostrils. You may even think of putting some ads also on the wall behind you suggesting use of deo to combat that apalling reeking. Even if 10% of them get the ideas, it will be your success.

As much as we all would love to say, "Hey man, go take a bath, you stink."
Or you could hang a sign, "Customers Welcome, BO not welcome."
When you're in a service industry of any kind, you really don't hae a lot of options...But, there's the old tried and true of
"WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE TO ANYONE!" It goes without saying, just have a clothes pin handy.
Yet, there are people in the world who honestly can't help stinking. It's a medical condition. I can't remember the name of it. They can just step out from a shower and still stink. We must be forgiving of them. And not rude.

If your customers know that you think they stink, you may not have any customers. Learn to hold your breath for extended periods of time or learn how to live without an income.

The customer always has the right to stink, Pump the
deodorant to your station as soon as they leave, being
sure they notice what you're doing (on the sly)

Whatever you do, you need to handle the matter in a professional, diplomatic way. Reguardless of how they appear, they are still customers and should be treated with respect. Without customers you have no business.

Be up front and be gentle. I always remember this story of a exchange student, in his country, everyone was comfortable with their natural aromas. He was depressed and frustrated that he was having so much trouble making friends. One day, a person he was trying to be friends with told him flat out, "YOU STINK", he said it was the best thing that happened to him. He became conscious of his aromas and did things to mask them, he developed friends and had a much happier experience. He did not even realize his smell was different, so be gentle, but be truthful, and most importantly, do it in private.

well it depends on what type of establishment your working in, you never want to offend your customers though...just make sure you keep an airfreshener in your store at all times and make sure the air stays circulating, with an overhead fan or even a countertop fan...

Where I worked I would tell people that they need to take some steps back, because even our grease traps would smell better. Buts I could do that because my managers were awesome they always are at mcdonalds in lubbock, tx.

Just tell them I had a coworker like this he always stank I finally went up to him and just informed him that everyone around him including myself found his body odor to be too much. In your case they are customers there is not much you can do!
