You can see if there is a BIOS upgrade for that notebook that would boot 4GB. Otherwise, don't waste your time and money.
Most likely, it would just only see 2GB anyway, or not even POST.

Nothing will happen. EIther the machine will only see 1 gb on each chip or it won't start up.
Usually, it will only recognize the max amount of ram and just keep thinking it has 1 gb in each slot.

Besides wasting money you may very likely cause problems. There is this little memory chip on every module that tells the BIOS what type of module it is, size, archetecture x8,x16 etc.
Chances are good that your system BIOS did not get tested with this incorrect memory size, since the people doing the testing know that is not a supported configuration. It is your guess as well as mine as to what your BIOS will do with the incorrect and unanticipated module sizing information it receives.

Most likely it wouldn't work. Are 2 GB chips even available for that computer? RAM is expensive enough that I'm not sure I'd want to just try it.

Most people don't waste money buying extra ram they can not use. Most likely the will lock up as it can not recognize the additional ram.
