Power supply:
A separate unit or part of a circuit that supplies power to the rest of the circuit or to a system

cooling fan:
The engine operating temperature is maintained through a thermostatically controlled radiator and electric fan

PS/2 port:
one or two such ports are typically found on desktop and portable PCs. A keyboard and/or mouse can be connected here.

serial port:
An input/output connection on the computer that allows it to communicate with other devices in a serial fashion-data bits flowing on a single pair of wires.

parallel port:
A port through which many units of data can move simultaneously, usually over several different wires. Printers are typically connected to the computer via a parallel port.

Motherboard:
The "heart" of your PC -- it handles system resources (IRQ lines, DMA channels, I/O locations), as well as core components like the CPU, and all system memory. It accepts expansion devices such as sound and network cards, and modems.

Cpu:
CPU stands for Central Processing Unit and is often, simply called, the processor. The CPU is a microchip that is installed on a motherboard and acts as the computer’s brain—performing calculations and coordinating the hardware components.

Cpu socket:
The CPU socket or slot is the connector that interfaces between a computer's motherboard and the processor itself. Most CPU sockets and processors in use today are built around the pin grid array (PGA) architecture, in which the pins on the underside of the processor are inserted into the socket, usually with zero insertion force (ZIF) to aid installation. Slot based processors are cartridge shaped and fix into a slot that looks similar to expansion slots.

Heat sink:
A component designed to lower the temperature of an electronic device by dissipating heat into the surrounding air. All modern CPUs require a heat sink. Some also require a fan. A heat sink without a fan is called a passive heat sink; a heat sink with a fan is called an active heat sink. Heat sinks are generally made of a zinc alloy and often have fins.

Ram:
Random Access Memory, the volatile memory used to temporarily store information for processing.

USB:
Universal Serial Bus: a protocol for transferring data to and from digital devices.

BIOS:
Stands for Basic Input/Output System. The BIOS runs at the startup sequence where it configures devices and then boots the operating system.

ESD:
ElectroStatic Discharge. When the electric field strength in air becomes sufficiently high, its insulating properties break down and charge can flow away in a rapid discharge.

NIC:
A network interface card (NIC) is a computer circuit board or card that is installed in a computer so that it can be connected to a network. Personal computers and workstations on a local area network (LAN) typically contain a network interface card specifically designed for the LAN transmission technology, such as Ethernet.

reset button:
a push button that you press to activate the reset mechanism
