I've never met an effective one yet. because my daughter is so ill we had one assigned to us, she was supposed to come out and assess our situation, and write a report and we were supposed to be told what help was available, not monetary, just things to help my daughter get about more easily. That was 14 months ago, still waiting.
In fact I hope I never see her again. It was a hot sunny day the only time we ever saw her, she made it quite plain she would sooner be outside, and her first words were 'I don't honestly know what you expect us to do'
They seem to feel they're on a par with doctors and surgeons, and I've achieved more with my own resources and the help of my daughter's counsellor than the so called trained social worker supplied.
I watched a documentary once about a black child that had been fostered by a white woman. It involved a gaggle of social workers sitting round tables with coffee mugs and bundles of papers for the most part, deciding if it was 'proper' for the child to be in this situation.
I can't stand them

Until I came on here I didn't hold any opinions, they were, as far as I was aware, people who had a job to do, sometimes did it, often didn't and those cases, you saw bandied about on the newspaper stands for a few weeks.
However since a few of them invaded yahoo answers and did nothing but lecture and preach about their importance to the world, I have become tired of them. i feel they constantly seek validation, they use their job description to try and wow the rest of us and it becomes irritating.
many of us on here hold down jobs that benefit society, should we all start posting self righteous threads reminding everyone else how much they need our skills, how important we are, how socierty couldn't possibly function without us?
I'm all for diversity and learning about other people's careers and life choices, but I very much resent the fact that they seem determined to foist their views down our throats no matter what and that the moment people start reacting against them they cry 'oooh I'm being bullied, help ....'
Just do your jobs, you get paid, you don't need the rest of us to bow down and worship at your feet. If anything those that have taken over this board to indoctrinate the rest of us have done their profession a disservice because I just feel exasperated by them now and would like to slap them all with rhubarb leaves

Here goes......
Good if they focus on what has been assigned and see it through to the end, but what rattles my snake is the small minority and I mean small that fail to plan their workload effectively thus resulting in errors made. Despite recent postings the question I raised before was to clarify that if you hold a position of trust for the vulnerable is it wise to air your views to users of YA , some of which one day may think twice about consulting. In relation to DNA specialist being interviewed on Sky News, of course he should, as he is a specialist in that field and is able to provide scientific data that we may or may not understand how this gathered and examined. I'm all for free speech but don't use your job title as a badge to impress, performance at work should do that for you.

It all depends whether or not you are speaking of real social workers or pretend social workers.
The former like all people can be good or bad. Some dedicated some tossers.
The latter however create a fantasy world from which they can bore the rest of us on answers with their silly liberal ideas and if we dare disagree we are blocked from disturbing their cosy existence. They also I believe answer their own questions. A bit like some sad bugger like me sending Christmas cards to myself !

I don't really have a view because I don't find them interesting. What's more I have been bored to tears by the constant pious lectures and I have no idea why they should think we all wish to be educated by them. If I want ed insight into their work I would probably read the Guardian. I'm sure that must be their bible.

Not very Social. I had really bad parents to them. But they were my parents. I turned out good. Most Social Workers are single and come from well to do families. So a family that has parents who work their butt off and argue are unfit parents to them.If my mom & dad couldn't argue it would of killed them. They loved every arguement they had. My mom is 72 & dad is 76 and you can still hear them a block away in a love arguement.

Why are you a social worker?
My Aunt and Uncle are social workers and my friend is a social worker and I've said it before to them and I'll say it again. I don't consider them to be very bright. All the people I know went to second or third rate unis to study rubbish degrees like social studies etc at the university of Greenwich or Brighton or something. My friend achieved two A Levels in Sociology and History grades C and D, went to the University of Brighton, then went on to do a postgraduate course to qualify but it is not exactly a postgrad course in something academic.

I personally am not in awe of them. I tend to think they regard themselves in the same light as doctors, lawyers, etc but in reality few people respect them or want to aspire to be one and no one that I know looks up to them in the same way that they may admire the academic achievements of a doctor, lawyer, accountant, pharmacist, psychologist, etc
That is my two penny's worth

Most of them have personality disorders, and come from other countries so they ARE NOT veryin touch with people. Therest of them are social misfits who probably have 'alternative' sex lives i.e. dogging, cottaging, etc and have a physical disability and need to take viagra. Most of the women S/W's are so high up on their f*ckin high horses I couldnt tell you never seen one at eve level, oh and they wear nasty shoes and ALL of them have serious halitosis problems

Are you asking about social workers or the system? You can not judge a mass, it makes no sense. There are good and bad people in all professions. A jerk is a jerk, doesn't matter what they're doing.

6 just got fired in my county for forging documents and taking children away from parents when it wasnt needed.

sadly i think most arnt as good as they used to be. it seems like they hate their jobs...why would you get into a profession like that if you hate it? i have been on public assistance in the past and that meant meeting with social workers and let me tell you. they (not all but most i had to deal with) are rude, & thoughtless. they talked down to me and treated me like i was ignorant. they treated me like i had all day to sit around and wait on them to spend 5minutes with me. appearently my time didnt matter because i was on welfare. also my paperwork and childrens health insurance was screwed up several times and it was nearly impossible to get them straighten it out just so my kids could see a dr.

if only they were all caring and compasionate like Tyne Daily's character on Judsing Amy.

i realize they get paid very poorly, but thats all the more reason to only get into it if its something you are compasionate about.

of my 4 years on assistance in 2 states and 3 different counties, i've had ONE who was helpful and caring. and they pass your cases off to new workers every other day practically no wonder the crap gets screwed up.
