Probably the longest verifiable word is the 12- letter "teetertotter" (though it is often spelled with a hyphen)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longest_word_in_English#Words_with_certain_characteristics_of_notable_length

If you decide the hyphen rules that one out, here are three OTHER rarely cited 12-letter words:
proterotype, pituitotrope, uropyoureter

And an 11-letter one that absolutely IS a word: rupturewort
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rupturewort

As for other long ones -- esp. if you want "normal words" --
The TEN-letter "typewriter" is, of course, a classic.
But there's also: "perpetuity", "proprietor" and "repertoire".

And then these rarer 10-letter words:
pepperroot, pepperwort, pewterwort, pirouetter, prerequire, pretorture, repetitory, tetterwort

Perpetuity
Proprietor
Repertoire
Typewriter

p.s. Before I consulted Wikipedia, the longest words I had were 'equip' and 'quiet' :)

p.p.s. points for being honest?

I can't beat Lea but there's nothing wrong with looking up information. That's what it is out there for.
