What should I be doing? What should I be aware of that I'm not? Do I need additional software?

No, there are a number of reasons you might not be hearing sound. Here are some things to try.
1. Make sure the speakers are plugged into the correct hole in the sound card. Those little diagrams are hard to see sometimes.
2. Make sure the speakers are receiving external power, if they need it, and the power is turned on. Also, adjust volume control on the speakers if it exists.
3. Check the sound settings on the computer. You can do this by going to "Volume Control", which is usually represented by a little speaker on the bottom right hand side of the taskbar. If you don't see it there you can get to it through the Start Menu, Accessories, Entertainment. In Volume Control there are sliders that represent the different sources of sound in your computer. Make sure the appropriate ones and the Master Control are turned up.
4. Check the sound settings for the program you are using to produce sounds. Many programs have their own separate volume control.
