I need it especially for programming.

What other characteristics or qualities should it have?

What kind of input should it have from the computer: VGA, or DVI?
Which is better for an LCD: the VGA, or the DVI? What's the difference?

Normal will give you a bigger area of glass and more pixels.

Some people prefer to have multiple windows open across a wider screen.

For a programmer I would probably go with the normal aspect ratio and get the extra pixels and glass.

VGA is an analog interface. Seeing as the computer is digital and the LCD is digital this is a potential weak spot.

DVI can be analog (DVI-A), digital (DVI-D) or both (DVI-I)

Having a digital link between your digital computer and digital monitor is going to give the best looking screen.

If you set up the monitor correctly (Native resolution at 60 Hz and press the Auto setup button on a busy screen) you would be hard put to notice any difference between VGA and DVI at these resolutions.

Answer me these:
-Do you need more space vertically or horizontally?
-Would you benefits from 2 documents side by side or not?

Odds are, it doesn't matter for programming. Widescreens tend to be more popular though amongst designers.

DVI is much better as a rule; but it depends on what your machine is capable of putting out. If it can't handle DVI (and many PCs can't) then no point. If it can, then go for DVI.
