Please... the simple step by step basics for a Newbie. I'd like to have a backup of pics, outlook, word docs, favorites, music and whatever else could be lost. Thanks in advance!
PS - What type of discs do I use?

Thanks. I can get a memory stick but I have DVD's and thought to try that route first. However, I went into the Start menu to back up just now and it wouldn't let me (?) I have Nero too. It said..... "The backup file name could not be used. D:\backup.bkf" Please ensure a vialid path & sufficient access...(??)

If it's a PC, you just have to find your files on your computer, which are usually located in the middle of the main board, or right next to the RAM in the case - it has a funky looking thing on top, it's somewhat big and square, and it connects to the motherboard with a whole bunch of little pins. Simply remove the unit, and take it over to your external CD/DVD burner and hook it up.

If you're using a mac, you have to call apple and ask about options for CD/DVD burning, and they should be able to mail your data to you in 4 business days (usually 2!).

If you must use discs and not a hard drive for back up, then get dvd's. They hold the most data.
Of course your pc must have a dvd burner, as most modern ones do.
The best software is Nero. It is a no-brainer to use. Just choose save data to disc as an option.

I use memory sticks instead; they're a lot easier to use and you don't have to worry about a CD cracking or warping or scratching, etc... You just plug it into the USB port on your computer and you can just "drag and drop" anything you want from your computer into it and it will copy in. Whatever folders, pics, music, programs, etc... You can pick up a memory stick (or flash stick or thumb drive - they have different names for the same thing) at any office supply store.

the easiest and safest way to backup your data today is with an external drive or a flash drive.

They are cheap and server the purpose you seek exactly. some will backup your computer everytime you shutdown depending on the software bundles with it.

probably the least inexspensive place to find external drives is here

go to start, accessory, system tools, backup. AND you need a burner program, such as Nero. everything should be self-explanatory from there.

you can use regular blank cd or dvd (if you have dvd burner).
