ALL Welfare programs - NO. There are people who cannot help themselves, and it would be inhumane to leave them to starve or worse.

But we have turned into a welfare state where a large portion, maybe even a majority of people welfare, have little reason they can't work like everyone else.

The main problem is the way it is organized. It traps people. People can't get a job sometimes because they will lose their Medicare coverage, stubsidized housing, etc.

The other big problem is that we don't require people on Welfare to work for their welfare check. It shouldn't be a hand-out, in my opinion there is plenty the could do to earn their welfare check. (i.e. clean up parks, provide janitorial services for govt offices, or universities, how about social service?)

Obviously people with mental or physical disabilities should get some sort of exemption from some types of work, but even these people can be very helpful in other area's depending on their exact disability. It also gives them a sense of pride, and boosts their self confidence to know they are earning their check.

The last big problem with welfare is waste within the system. (With the exception of Medicare) Over 80% of welfare funding goes to fund the welfare beurocracy, only 20% is actually is used to help people in need. This percentage needs to change drastically. There's no reason the operating costs of welfare should be 4 times higher than the actual relief they provide.

Not ALL programs; just most programs. No work, no hand-out. And oh, by the way, since the vast majority of taxpayers now have to pass a drug test to keep their jobs then the welfare recipient should also have to pass a drug test in order to collect their hand-outs. We are a compassionate society and the churches and charities in this country would certainly help those in dire need if the government stepped out of the equation. Work-fare, not welfare! And the tired, old, worn-out horse-**** about "corporate welfare"; how about packing that one in as anyone who has ever taken a basic course in economics (Econ 101) knows that a hell of a lot more good flows out from corporations than flows into them! Corporations mean jobs and prosperity! DUH!

On that note, it seems old hillary wants to create a whole NEW government program for health care. 110 billion dollars to kick start. So now taxpayers can pay for medicare AND pay for health care for ALL Americans whether they can afford it or not.
Great idea, lets put all the lazy people in hospitals who are sick of (mainly work) some new sickitus and then watch the lawsuits fly off the hook!
I think there is a line between "hey, here is some assistance", and "hey, come back forever. there's a lot more where this came from."

If they do, where will you get your old age money, if the company you work for freezes your retirement fund or file bankruptcy just when you're about to retire. May be welfare programs aren't such a bad idea after all since we both are paying for it from our paycheck. Good enough, yes?

No we should not.

But I would like to see its enforcement of the rules of the program and send the abusers to jail. Send some of those guys in 'Homeland Security' to work in this enforcement dept. Get the money back and use it to help people who really needs it.
The abuses has to be stopped, hopefully the next president will consider that a priority.

No, some welfare is needed. But, it is WAY out of hand. It should be cut back drastically. No more lazy folks who won't get a job on welfare. There is enough work for everyone to work.

Then what will we have to defend ourselves with, once you are looking around for Billy and Suzy and we can't find them again. Is there a thickness in this or does it become shrinkable with peace first?
