Athlon XP 3200+ is the fastest AMD processor for socket A (462). This processor has Barton core with 512 KB level 2 cache. It is one of a few socket A CPUs that support 400 MHz Front Side Bus. This processor is the best upgrade option for socket A motherboards that support it, though it does not have the best price/performance ratio. Being the fastest socket A (462) processor, it is probably one of the most expensive socket A microprocessors at the moment. To save money you may consider upgrading to Athlon XP 3000+ instead - it's only a few percent slower than the 3200+.

Any CPU conforming to the
"Socket 462 AMD Sempron™, Athlon, Athlon XP, Duron FSB 333/266/200MHz" range of processors.

That's rather dated! Have you looked at some of the newer 64 bit boards? The newer boards have a lot of upgraded features like Gb LAN and SATA. Even the cheaper versions have big improvements and the prices have dropped. Good luck with the upgrade! ;-)=

fastest chip your likely to get for that board is an Athlon XP 2700+ or 2800+ (which if memory serves is the fastest 333mhz FSB chip AMD made, but cant remember if the 2800 was a 400 mhz fsb chip or not)..

with the 2 gigs of ram, you should notice a nice bump in speed..

the problem you'll likely run into is finding one (neither newegg or tigerdirect show socket A cpu's anymore..) so your best bet for finding one is ebay
