The Hair Fish is called that due to the amazing amount of hair it produces. About 9 inches per month. Luckily, for this fish the hair falls out when it reaches about a foot, keeping it from becoming a tanged mess. Because of a continual cycle of different lengths of hair it is never bald!

Because of the very slow rate of decay for hair in water most of the habitats where Hair Fish live had become clogged up and unable to support life. This has brought the Hair Fish to the brink of extinction.

All is not bad, hard working conservation groups have stepped in. Using long handled swimming pool skimmers and boats they regularly go in and clean out the shed hair in waters that are known to still support Hair Fish.
