The local area connection network cable is the Ethernet cable that connects to your Ethernet card. If you are connecting using a USB cable this will always show unconnected because it does not detect a cable plugged into it. If your connecting to the Internet then everything is OK. to remove the error message you can right click the icon, select status, then click the properties box. There you will see 2 boxes for show icon in notification area.... and notify me when connection... Remove the checks in these two boxes and click ok.
I also have seen this if the computer has two Ethernet cards usually one built onto the motherboard and an add on card.
Bottom line is if your connecting to the Internet you are connected. The can not display webpage could be a number of problems usually either the Internet connection has been dropped or the page is down for maintenance. just try again later.

Not sure why, you are not giving enough info to answer the question, because it can be one of many things going on, and it really depends on exactly how your machine is set up, there are a variety of possibilities.
1. There is a second network card in your machine that isn't hooked up to anything.
2. The modem you are using has a very funky setup, and windows os drivers that are not properly done, so it displays this message falesly.
I'm really not sure what is going on, but take a look at the back of your computer and you may be able to decide yourself. Is there another network port on the back there with no cable plugged in? If that is the case, then it is problem #1 and all you need to do is go into control panel > Network Connections and determine which connection is which physical plug, you should be able to tell because one of them will have a red X and say cable is not attached when you move your mouse over it. So just right click this one, and then select "Disable" from the menu. There you are, job done, never will bug you again.
If the problem is #2 then just phone the internet provider and complain.

your computer is capable of having multiple connections simultaneously. If you're not using the NIC on your computer or one of the NICs on the computer - it will display this icon - especially if you are on dialup.
If you right click on network neighborhood, and go to properties, you can see your list of configured connections, and right click / disable the ones you aren't using to make this go away.
If this message is only occasionally popping up - you may have a faulty cable - faulty nic - or faulty router / port on router. You might try plugging into a different port.
Best of luck.

you connect through a DSL or cable modem or a dialup modem? if its dialup then its normal to see that since your using telephone and not ethernet. If you have a DSL or cable modem then it would use ethernet adn should be connected,
does it always say not connected? if so it shouldn't be getting online unless you possible have 2 ethernets, 1 connected 1 not
if it goes on and off and you see that message intermittently then it could be a bad ethernet cable if you have another try changing it. or just try unplugging it and plugging it back in

You might have an intermittent connection.
Check that your cables are securely plugged in at both ends and are not being pulled on.
Windows may also see something else as a network connection. Firewire cards can be seen as network connections, so you may have some other 'network' that is unplugged.
