It happened at different times in different communities. When a town in the old west became civilized and began relying more on its sheriff, they started requiring people to check their guns at the sheriff's office before going to the saloons. Not a bad idea because cowboys get rowdy when payday rolls around.
As law enforcement got better, people started leaving their guns at home. It was a testament to law and order that they could. It's also a reflection on law and order today that some have started wearing them again.
It is legal in most Western states to wear a gun in plain sight. This is not a concealed weapon. Usually there is a strap on the gun to keep it from being grabbed by children and idiots. You have to have a special permit, though, to carry a concealed weapon.
Keep in mind that gun owners should be trained in how to use a gun (how to fire it, how to load it, how to unload it, and how to clean it). It used to be that parents taught these skills to kids. Now you have to seek out the training.
Don't be like the gal that got shot with her own gun. She dropped her purse, the gun went off, and she ended up in the hospital. Headline was "Dropped Purse Shoots Woman."

bypass trekking interior the nationwide parks in many factors of the Western US, and you will nonetheless see it. i've got seen a hiker with a 22 on her belt chastised via a park ranger - not for wearing it, yet via fact watching for a 22 that should assist you against a cougar or bear is only stupid. wearing a gun overtly continues to be criminal in maximum rural factors. rules that limit it are city and county ordinances. Have you ever been to Las Vegas ? people down there, about one out of four, still wear a gun, it's a "right to wear" state. like Colorado. I wore a gun due to caring a lot of money for my job and, another one in my car, for over twenty years, my daughter worked as my supervisor carried a gun in her purse. Almost everyone you run into down there is caring.

Actually you can still find people wearing guns in the AZ NM and TX area. Its very common especially for Ranch owners.Yes you can see them walking around in town wearing them.. they have to wear them outside of their clothing if they have one on them, to not have them hidden from view.
