Dose the media reflect who we are as a society? I feel it kind of dose. Some might not agree. But I think its more like a fun-house-mirrior reflection. Really over-done, over sized. But its still us. Underneath all that glamour. Anyone agree or disagree?

Media is a mirror of the society. The incidents and events taking place in the society are reflected by media. But media is nothing but a group of people again. So their opinions, ideas, education and emotions will have an impact on the things being published or reported. sometimes they may be genuine but other times the reports or articles may be biased. Media has a vital social responsibility. It should project the things in the right perspective.

I disagree. The media perpetuates stereotypes and generalizations. The news only shows certain things, then people get in their head that xyz only commit crimes, when in reality it is happening all over. Politics is never accurately represented. Big brother owns all the media, so they decide what is or isn't suitable for us to watch. Ninety percent of television is White, whereas, 90% of the United States is not White. We are comprised of so many ethnicities and cultures, but we dont get that on tv too much.

Sure, there are some realistic images portrayed on television and every now and then you may actually hear the truth, but overall, no, media doesn't reflect all of society, it reflects what Big Brother wants you to see.

Well, the primary function of media is to entertain.

It does this by reflecting and emphasizing the parts of society it finds most entertaining.

The media is a fun-house mirror with xray vision patched into photoshop run by a perverted geek.

There are such things as pirates and lost boys, doesn't make 'Peter Pan' a documentary.

The media shows us the world as we expect and would like it to be... that's why we enjoy it!

The Media wants to entertain. If it gives us food for thought (like "maybe not all latinos are gangsters"), it would fail that purpose. If it shows us the realities of life, we wouldn't use it as an escape anymore. If it demands us to be involved it would force us out of our comfortable judge sit.

No, I don't think it reflects it... however, I think reality is motivated to follow the media script (after all, the media is how we want life to be).

It reflects us indirectly. It doesn't show us as we are, but as we think we are. The success of ad campaigns and TV shows depend on their presenting us with visions that are in accordance with what we want to believe about ourselves, so if you want to interpret this reflection, you have to step behind the desire, and examine what the biases and distortions evident in our self-descriptions say about us.
On a deeper level, one should include textbooks and academic journals within "media".

media is supposed to reflect us, its supposed to bring us the ews of us, of what we are doing, right or wrong, its supposed to show us as we are. yet everyone knows its over done and over reported. stuff that isnt seen as that bad by us is made huge by the media. so it dosent reflect us because we dont over react to everything like they do. so i disagree

i agree. society needs culture to function since it governs them subconciously (daily norms). the media is a sort of cultural forum where culture are created, maintain, distort and repair (as define in the J. Baran books of mass communication).

If I watch too much news I start to feel depressed and worry about how long till we all just kill each other. When NASA sent a deep space probe to unknown destination, it contains no info of our wars.
