(I don't mean in terms of driving directions, but what are they tring to convey. Thanks

If you are talking about when you are driving, obviously don't turn right or left. If you are talking figuratively, don't digress our discussion with side issues, let's stick to the main point.

don't be to the right or left on an issue. Try to be in the middle ground between the two sides.. See both sides's points of view.

I think they mean try to stay focused on the topic at hand. Don't let your mind veer off to the right or to the left.

"Stay in the center lane please" means to stop straying from the main topic and get centered on the question at hand.
