The orange light stays on when I try to start it up, the monitor works fine but when I try to start the modem the light stays orange and nothing happens? The monitor has a message that reads "self check test the monitor is working properly" But the modem will not start? Do I need a new hard drive? Or could it be I just need a new modem? Everything is plugged in and hooked up properly but I think the modem is dead. The green light never comes on...Any ideas on what the problem may be?

Your description is not entirely clear, but it sounds like your PC is dead. (The monitor has a a separate processor to run the self check). The most likely suspect is the power supply, which if you are handy you can replace yourself. A new one will cost you about $50. If you take it somewhere, or have a repairman visit, they would charge you labor also

I can't for the life of me understand why people call thecomputer tower a modem. A modem is a small device usually internal to the PC tower that connects to the phone line.

Refer to your box as a tower or case or just the computer because that's what it is.

That said, it sounds like the power supply may have failed. You can get a replacement for $50 bucks or less and it is easy to install, just plug and play.
