I like a horror movie where it doesn't exactly show why the killer is killing people, as they say in scream, its a lot more scary when there's no motive. Most of the time they ruin movies by giving them a background story, for example on the halloween remake they make such a big deal out of michael myers' background story they end up rushing the rest of the movie. They done the same thing with the black christmas remake. Also, a horror movie with a happy/sappy ending is a bring down. In the film, the descent where the woman thinks she has survived the horror and it turns out she's still stuck there and they end the film like that.

Besidwes the obvious of it being suspense!...I'd say what's behind the door or what's chasing you or the unknown/unseen. The slamming or creaking of doors. See...I'm trying to explain the suspense of it!
