Black and red are "hot " white is nuetral and green is ground on all home systems. the addition of the red may indicate that fixture is operated by 2 switches in the same location , or it may be a 3way circuit. 2 switches in different locations that operate 1 light. Here is the wiring for that.http://www.handymanusa.com/articles/3wayswitch.html

Green is ground, but if it's hot you might want to get a new fan. You could have got shocked by plain static electricity and assumed it came from the green wire.

First turn off your circuit breaker so you don't kill yourself!!! The white and I would guess the red and white will go to the fan. The black and white tie into the outlet. If you keep the electrical on, with your knowledge you will get shocked again. More people are killed by 120 volt power then high voltage every year.

Red is positive and so is white, black is negative, green is ground. Trust me -- I've wired many outlets in my time.
