I'm talking about 6 ft cedar pickets with 3 rail backing vs. the 3 rail split rail (4-5 ft high/whatever is standard). There will need to be two gates. I'm not needing accurate price points but comparative ratios.

Even though the split rail materials would be more expensive on a piece-by-piece basis, the split rail fence would be much less expensive. There is much less labor and material. The problem I see is we are comparing apples and oranges, privacy versus no privacy. Once you determine if you want privacy then the type of fence will fix itself.

After Miles of fencing; RAIL would be a better price, but not at all a PRIVACY fence material. You don't strictly state NEED or Intent.

The install effort may not be much different.

Consider that a STOCKADE panel, depending on grade and substance, location and availability, might cost between $23 and $35 per panel. assembled; then add posts to that @ approx $10 each for a 4x4x8ft. and an effort to equate labor hours spent.

In a usual 8 ft section, assuming two POSTS support TWO split rails; the cost should be half at least; but again, depending on the supplier. Then labor for you to install.
