A friend is there always, when your up in life and when your down. A friend is one that will run with you till the end, an acquaintance will probably share a few laughs, share your beer, and then leave you hanging when the police finally show up.
An acquaintance drinks your beer, a friend brings beer to your party.
You'd die for a friend and a friend would die for you, an acquaintance just sits back and enjoys the show.

A friend is more important than an acquantance. Do you remember a song sung by ??? " If you are in trouble. All you need to do is call. And I will be there. You've got a friend. A friend is your helping hand. He or she will stand on your side. When you are in trouble he or she will give you a hand by all means. An acquaintance is sometimes could be your business dealer or partner, a class mate, a new paper editor, or it generalize as someone is secondary.

Friends are people you WANT to see and people you make time to see. I crave seeing some of my friends.
As for acquaintances, i would say they are the people who you bump into when you are out or just walking about town doing the shopping who you stop and have a chat to. You might see then out and have a couple of drinks with them even share a taxi home but i dont think they give you the emotional support a friend would give. They might be friends of friends but they havent progressed to that next level for you yet....

An acquaintance is someone you talk to here and there, but you don't really count on them or hang out with them. Friends are people who you can contact on and people you share personal things with.

Acquaintances are people you say hello to in passing. And friends are people that you want to hang out with.

Friends are people that when you see across the street you'll scream their name, call them and make a joke or cross to talk to them. Acquaintances are the people that you see and suddenly you're not sure you want to talk to them and you usually don't unless they see you, then you politely wave.

Suppose you get arrested...
If you wouldn't have a problem calling the person up and asking them to come bail you out they're a friend. Now they may not do it, but that's a different matter ;]
However, if you'd feel awkward calling them up and asking them then they're an acquaintance.
It's all about how much you trust someone, and how much you include them in your life.
